The Borough of West Chester was first settled in 1712 and became the governmental seat for Chester County in 1786. It didn’t become a borough until 1799. The population in 2010 was 18,461. It is located about 25 miles west of Philadelphia and about 17 miles north of Wilmington, DE.
With plenty of local, family owned restaurants and shops popping up in West Chester, we decided to create the West Chester Food Tours to promote the Downtown West Chester Food Scene!
West Chester was originally known as Turks Head, after the Inn of the same name located in now what is the center of the borough. It was the first commercial operation and was founded in 1762. It was near the northeast corner of High and Market.
West Chester is unique for the fact that it contains such a large collection of well-preserved eighteenth century architecture for such a small town located in a suburban region. The secret is that WC was lucky in that its structures weren’t destroyed by fire or some other disaster like what happened in many other cities. The Philadelphia Inquirer called West Chester one of the world’s most perfect small towns.
